Kao’garden, brimming with historical romance
This garden, considered among one of the three finest gardens in Tosa, was built more than four hundred years ago by Endo Totomi no Kami Yoshinori. It has passed the hands of various famous personages throughout the years. The scale of the main garden alone is 660 square meters. Close to two hundred varieties of plants, trees, and flowers adorn the garden through the four seasons. In spring there are cherry blossoms and in autumn there is lovely foliage. Given its beauty, the garden has been beloved by many people through the ages, and records state that they include historical personages like Emori Ueki and Taisuke Itagaki. Sakamoto Ryoma himself is said to have become a lordless samurai, leaving the Tosa domain to see this garden and other sights. Hirai Kao, Sakamoto's first love, also spent some of her last years at this garden with her husband, Yukizumi Nishiyama. The cherry trees and lily magnolias remain in the same shape and form as they were in the days Hirai Kao gazed out at them. This is an eternal garden of the four seasons, transcending time.
